Why The Burgeon Project exists

Too many people don't quite fit the systems built for them

Many autistic and neurodivergent adults reach adulthood and encounter systems that were never designed with them in mind. Many of our youth are undiagnosed and labeled as mentally ill or behavior-challenged. Some just need more help with executive functioning, employment, transportation, relationships, daily living, or emotional regulation. Some also live with anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, addiction, chronic illness, or other co-occurring conditions. Many move between levels of need throughout their lives.

Too often, people are expected to fit into separate systems for housing, mental health, addiction recovery, employment, and disability support. Each system sees one piece of the person, but few are designed to support the whole life. Families are left asking what happens when school ends, when parents can no longer help, after a crisis, after a relapse or lost job — when a person needs both freedom and support.

The Burgeon Project exists because those questions deserve better answers.

What we believe

Behavior is information. Belonging is not failure.

Diagnoses may describe part of a person's experience, but they do not define their worth.

Behavior is information — often a coping response to trauma, fear, isolation, or unmet needs.

Understanding behavior doesn't remove accountability — it creates accountability with support.

People grow when they feel safe enough to grow.

Meaningful work improves confidence, identity, stability, and well-being.

Community is therapeutic. Purpose is therapeutic. Employment offers purpose.

Independence exists on a continuum. Recovery is rarely linear.

Most of all, we believe belonging changes people.
